A look back at a welcome return: Boat Week
When it comes to the city of Port Huron, there are few events as big and as popular as Boat Week, and this year was no exception.
When it comes to the city of Port Huron, there are few events as big and as popular as Boat Week, and this year was no exception. After many of the events were cancelled last year due to the restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Boat Week returned this year in full swing.
The main attraction centered around Boat Week is the Port Huron-to-Mackinac Island Boat Race. The race consists of approximately 200 sailboats and is one of the longest fresh water boat races in the world, this according to Wikipedia. The week starts off with the Rotary International Day Parade on Wednesday, Family Night on Thursday, and Boat Night on Friday followed with the boat race on Saturday.
The Rotary International Day Parade featured floats from many of the area’s local businesses and organizations. Participants dressed up to match their themed floats as they marched through Military street in downtown Port Huron.
Thursday’s Family Night was highlighted by Salon Pizazz and their “Mannequins Making A Difference” event which consisted of individuals dressed up in various eye-catching and unique costumes to raise money for local non profits. The event was hosted by Mad Hatter Entertainment, LLC, and was a big hit with those who attended.
Friday’s Boat Night saw the largest attendance of the week and consisted of live performances, food vendors, and more. Some of the performers were from the local area, such as Hip-Hop artists Pee.Tzu and Blactivity, as well as folk-rock act Gasoline Gypsies. The streets were alive with the energy only Boat Week 2021 could bring to the city of Port Huron. If you missed it this year, make sure you attend this annual event next year when it returns, and see the beauty of community, entertainment, and boat racing.
