What’s Happening: The Michigan Pet Alliance, a nonprofit focused on creating awareness and advocating for the use of best practices in animal shelters, is hosting its Regional Workshop Series in cities across the state, including Port Huron. All of the workshops have a different focus, from how to investigate and report animal cruelty and abuse to behavior and body language. In Port Huron, attendees can learn about cat body language and behavior and how to create a successful barn cat program from cat behavioral specialist Jess Vankoningsveld with the Humane Society of Huron Valley

When: November 10, 2025, from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Where: St. Clair County Library in the Gilbert-Wilcox Room. The library is located at 210 McMorran Blvd. in Port Huron.

Why it Matters: “Our members in St. Clair County asked for a cat-focused workshop,” says Courtney Protz-Sanders, Michigan Pet Alliance board member. “The county has a lot of rural communities, and where there are farms, there are barn cats. Our workshop will discuss barn cats, as well as how to better read a cat’s body language, which can help indicate when a cat is sick.” Animal shelters also play a vital role in providing communities with pet services like veterinary care, rehoming support, and services like population management and behavioral programs.

How to Join: Those interested can register online here for the event.
